House La Pastorale - Stellenbosch
Designed & delivered by Henk Marais & Marilu Joubert
Located within the La Pastorale estate in beautiful Stellenbosch, meant that estate Architectural Guidelines had to be adhered to whilst getting the most benefit from this great site. Views, sun angles and wind direction were all taken into account in the design of this house. The client's brief was for a house with great flow to compliment their lifestyle, whilst taking advantage of the beautiful views of the Stellenbosch valley and mountains. This five bedroom house, including a guest suite, was designed in a u-shape, turning its back on the prevailing South-Easterly and South-Westerly winds. The ground floor is arranged around a centrally positioned kitchen that opens up to a covered patio, with built in braai, that connects to the swimming pool.
The clients required a safe family zone and therefore all the bedrooms were positioned on the first floor with a security shutter isolating this portion of the house from the ground floor. All windows are double glazed with intruder proof glass. This ensures that the envelope of the building is also secure.
The house is designed to be very energy efficient and utilises numerous renewable energy sources. The ground floor slabs were insulated to prevent energy loss. Double glazing was installed in all windows and roof insulation was over specified. A water based underfloor heating system was installed that is powered by solar water heaters as well as heat pumps and a collection of photo voltaic panels were also installed on the roof to provide power to the house.
Client Feedback:
My favourite part of the design is the kitchen flow to the outside area with pool and braai. I found the Connect team to be easy and accommodating and
it was a real pleasure working with the them and they made this project such a wonderful and easy experience. Looking forward to the next one!!! :)
